Our Eco Boutique Hotel, Casa Mía El Cuyo,
is proud to be considered a sustainable hotel, aligning with environmentally responsible practices while respecting the incredible environment that hosts us — the Natural Reserve of Ría Lagartos.
1. Eco-friendly Design and Materials:
At Casa Mía El Cuyo, sustainability starts with design. We use locally sourced materials and emphasize natural integration with our surroundings to reduce our environmental footprint. Every room is equipped with locally crafted sun-shielding window protection to reduce direct sunlight and keep interiors cooler. Air vents above the doors allow natural air circulation, ensuring a comfortable environment without relying heavily on artificial cooling. Furthermore, the natural vegetation surrounding the property provides ample shade, keeping the area cool and inviting.
2. Energy Conservation:
Reducing electricity consumption is a core part of our sustainability mission. We use energy-efficient lighting and minimal electric appliances — for example, we brew coffee using traditional Italian moka pots and heat water with a gas boiler. The kitchen is powered by propane, further reducing the demand for electricity. By promoting natural lighting and ventilation, we lower our energy consumption while maintaining comfort.
3. Water Conservation:
Water is a precious resource, and Casa Mía is committed to conserving it. We encourage guests to request laundering services only when necessary, and we recycle water by redirecting it to our gardens. We also educate our staff and guests on best practices for efficient water use.
4. Waste Management:
Waste reduction is a priority at Casa Mía. We actively recycle, compost, and use biodegradable or reusable products. For non-recyclable materials like plastic packaging, we create eco-bricks by filling bottles with plastic waste. This innovative approach helps reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills and promotes a circular economy.
5. Local and Organic Products:
We are deeply committed to supporting the local economy. Most of our furniture, materials, and food are sourced locally, reducing our carbon footprint. Casa Mía is working on setting up a little farm, just 14 km from the hotel. This ensures fresh, organic farm-to-table meals while supporting sustainable agriculture in our community.
6. Conservation of Natural Surroundings:
Being located in a pristine natural setting, Casa Mía takes active steps to preserve the surrounding environment. We plant native species, protect local wildlife and avoid the use of harmful chemicals, ensuring that the beauty and biodiversity of the area are maintained for generations to come.
7. Community Involvement:
We believe that true sustainability extends beyond environmental conservation. Casa Mía actively collaborates with local artisans and organizations, providing jobs, promoting culture, and fostering a tourism model that benefits the community without compromising the natural environment.
These practices make Casa Mía El Cuyo a model of sustainable tourism, blending luxury with a deep commitment to preserving nature’s beauty for future generations.
